Chapter 2 My job

I have been given a new assignment by an old couple. They are fairly wealthy so I think they will pay for what I am doing for them. I have done my background check on them. They are fairly clean, working hard through their life and now have a not so little nest egg saved up.
I will let you in a little secret, what I do is not exactly legal, but it is not illegal, either. I normally don't work with the others, but for argument's sake, I can tell you that I work with a lot of people. My job is fairly simple, but what I need to accomplish normally takes more than one skilled worker to do. This is why I go to The Zoo to meet my colleagues. I don't think they will be happy if I tell you about them, but why not, they aren't exactly public figures and all of them are people like me, if you know what I mean. We aren't going to advertise the fact that we can turn into dolphins or other animals, are we? We don't want any trouble in our life, we just want to get on with it.
The old couple wanted a revenge. You hear about this type of thing all the time, an old couple losing all their money after their financial company collapsed. They don't have an nest egg anymore, their children can't help them because they have their own problems. This cute couple are a little bit more cunning than that, yes, they did lose their money but they don't only have one nest egg. They want their nest egg back, with interest.
Their target, or shall I say, my target, is a rich businessman who owns various companies in our country and overseas. What they propose to do is slightly tricky, but I think all in all doable if I am given enough time. They said that they don't care when it's done as long as it is done. They also told me that not to worry if they die before the deed is done. What a fantastic couple! They have put away a considerable amount of money in a bank somewhere. In the event of their death, the money will go to charity if I haven't done what they asked me to do, but if I have done it, they will give the money to me. They also said if I am willing to spread the money around a little bit to the people who have helped, it's up to me.
The Zoo is an interesting place. You see a whole lot of people coming in and going out, but you don't see them staying. I normally come in the afternoon just before closing because I know that none of these animals are animals really, they are all human pretending to be animals. I hope you are not confused, they aren't machines, they are just like me.
The staff tea room is always a nice place to hang out because there's plenty of food and drinks there. All the people who were working day shift are coming in for their food and drinks, and it's easy to catch up with them there. The night shift people are coming back. This joint is easy money. What I do is a lot harder so The Zoo is where most people like me hang out. Some of us works for the circus, and some work in private zoos. The zookeepers love us. We don't need so much food and we understand people. Next time when you go to the zoo nearest you, just remember those animals who are friendly to you and dance when you walk past. You may be looking at a friend of mine.
Yes, talking about animal training, we don't require training really. Or, do we? I guess we do.
"So, Morgan, I heard you've got a big fish to fry. You got any work for me?"
"I guess so. It depends on your availability. I am putting together a team."
"Sure. I am a bit sick and tired of this zoo business anyway, think I will retire after your one. Morgan, you going to retire one day? You don't need the money anyway."
"Oh, it's something to do, you know? I like to be amongst things."
"Kid, you will get yourself killed one day, swimming like that. It attracts too much attention."
"Look who's talking now? You are the most popular animal in this zoo! Retiring? I must be deaf, you've saying that for years."
"Well, this is the easy life. I don't really want to change."
"No, I bet you don't. Money and food on the table, wise choice. What kind of jobs can we do anyway? Circus freaks? Prancing around in the private zoo? I don't think so, not for me, anyway."
"Count your blessings now, you really don't want to get discovered like that fish the other day. He was taken to the laboratory immediately. I don't know what they are doing with him."
"I heard he escaped already. Probably back to the zoo today? You haven't seen him?"
"No. I think he may be at home. I don't know, I hope he's at home."
"Sure. They can't tell if this one is a man or a fish anyway. They aren't like my doctor, too thick to figure out what's what and too clever to believe what they think is impossible."
"That gave him the slip, yes, I think we are lucky that we can turn back. This is the life. I say, these animals can't turn to anything else, I don't know how they do it. It's a hard life."
"Yeah, and our life's hard, too."
My friend is a peacock. He hasn't been working at the zoo for very long, but he worked for a private collector. Peter McDonald is an old man now, he never worked as a human, and he's always been an entertainer. He worked for private collectors in different countries so when he's human, he can travel. That's what he likes, going to Europe and America where the money is. He likes to fulfill the rich man's dream of owning a perfect peacock. He prances around the yard, he walks gracefully in front of the guests in parties, and he sleeps in the best backroom that is always locked. He doesn't have a wife, says he doesn't need one, but I suspect that he has a lover somewhere. I don't really care, as long as he gets the job done, I am happy.
Mr. McDonald is our entertainment man. He deals with all sorts of entertainment, singing, acting, making movies and videos, and even making games. He is your ultimate hedonist guy. If you want to be happy, then he's your man, he knows all the good casinos in town and where the pubs are. If there's a party in town, he will know about it.
The second person just walked in through the door. This is Vanessa, my beautiful elephant girl. She is from South Africa, her curly hair cascading like a fountain around her graceful face. She has the longest limbs and slimmest body, and it's hard to imagine that she turns into an elephant everyday.
Vanessa is my marksman. Her only goal in life is to shoot. It's easy to see why, though. Her family had been shot by the poachers. She made it her life's mission to shoot all the poachers when she's in human form, and she's doing really well. I wouldn't be surprised if more poachers die tomorrow if she's on holiday.
